EDUC 8842 Blog Post #3

I was unsuccessful at posting my storyboard to this blog so I have it in outline form instead:

What Motivates Adult Learners in Distance Education?

  • Life changes trigger personal educational pursuits

  • Increased interactive features: simulations and animations motivate adults

  • Encouragement, support, and assistance from family and peers

  • Learning will enable economic competitiveness and meet personal development needs

  • Role of learner emphasized: self-learner, self-directed

  • Learning has applicability to real life tasks: task-centered or life-centered

  1. Hi Neena -- nice outline. I was curious about #5 - self-learning. Many adult learners conpleted their basic education before the focus on student-centered learning and self-learning. They come from the hear it...recite it period of learning. Do you see the focus on self-learning as a challenge or have they developed these skill through work and life experience? Thanks for sharing.

  2. Hi Neena:
This has been a very stressful Blog for me too. I ran into lots of problems, loading, not being able to load what I wanted correctly. However, we will manage. I see your outline has six different emphasis, what connections are you planning with the reading from the course? If you have that planned yet, not sure if it was due. Thanks, and best of luck. Amy

  3. Hi Debbie,

I have read alot about androgogy and Knowles theories about adult learners. Knowles (1975, 1998) stated there are three things to consider with adult learners; self-concept of the learner, accumulated life experience, and and the purpose the learner has in mind for the material being leaned. Unlike kids, adult learners approach learning with their accumulated life experinces and reservoirs of knowledge (Keating, 2006). Adult learners want to have control over their learning, control over their own lives, and have a say over the content and direction of their learning (Keating, 2006). Adults learn best when the locus of control resides in the learner, and not the teacher as we see in pedagogy. Thanks for your interest in my post and I hope that I have answered your questions.

  4. Hi Amy,

Finally I was successful at uploading my storyboard but not after much frustration.I am not certain how I will connect with the reading, but I think that using the constructivist theory which is the hallmark of collaboration will be a nice fit. Palloff and Pratt (2005) discuss community collaboration and I think that will tie into my writing about adult motivation in distance education. Thanks for your question Amy and I hope that I have answered you adequately.
